Video taken from MARKmobil. - Just under a year before the presidential elections in France, French President Emmanuel Macron began a "Tour de France" last week. During his tour of the country, Macron wants to test his chances for re-election.
However, the French leader was received in a most unpleasant manner on Tuesday during his tour of the Drôme department in southeastern France. As he approached a crowd, an unidentified man slapped him hard across the face.
The Élysée Palace later confirmed that there had been an incident, but not that Macron had actually been punched. There had been an "attempt," it said in a statement to Le Monde newspaper. In addition, the Élysée said that two people had been arrested. The reason for the attack is unclear so far. The man shouted "Down with Macronie!" before slapping the president. French media later described the attacker as an "anarchist." Commenting on the incident late Tuesday, Prime Minister Jean Castex condemned the incident. Rassemblement National party leader Marine Le Pen also condemned the attack, tweeting that physical aggression against the president was "unacceptable."
